UPDATE 2025-09-06 13:08:33 UTC A filed engineer has been dispatched and a power issue was confirmed. Currently Core Ops is working with the on-site tech to restore the connectivity. Next update within 90 min. UPDATE 2025-09-06 14:04:14 UTC Connectivity has been restored. Issue was caused by a fault PEM on one of our devices that caused an issue in the PDU related to it. Power was restored by migrating all the affected power feeds. Monitoring for stability. UPDATE 2025-09-06 16:04:02 UTC Resolution Update: Connectivity remains stable. Site owner engineer advised the issue is not related to our device's PEM, but one of the PDUs on site went faulty. Currently all affected devices are powered up. Power remains stable and on-site activities have been completed. We now consider the case is resolved. Incident Resolution 2025-09-06 13:40:22 UTC Core Ops detected isolation of several devices in Washington. A field engineer was dispatched and found an issue with one of the PDUs on site, which was faulty. Affected devices were powered up by adjacent PDUs on site. All affected devices recovered. All necessary measures to avoid similar issue in the future will be taken.

Cosmic's Official Update: We just wanted to shed some light on the situation over the past 24 hours. Initially, we were dealing with some very large DDoS attacks, which caused certain issues. The attacks ranged in sizee from 1.5Tbps to 2.5Tbps and totaled about 35-40 in a 16 hour period so far. These attacks were mostly handled, however, an emergency script on our side subsequently triggered a subnet-wide connectivity issue for a few subnets. We've since patched the script and restored connectivity. Additionally, we have multiple Tbps of extra capacity pending delivery and handoff, which should be completed shortly to deal with the increasing cyber threat landscape we find ourselves in. We’ll be working diligently around the clock to keep things stable. We truly appreciate your loyalty things will be back to normal soon.

The scale and speed of these attacks have been intense. **While our systems are capable of mitigating the attacks themselves**, the core issue lies in the **congestion that occurs during the mitigation process**. This congestion can ripple across our network and impact services in multiple locations including **Dallas, London, Los Angeles**, and others. ### What’s Next? The good news: **CosmicGuard is already implementing a capacity upgrade**, adding over **3 Tbps** of mitigation bandwidth. This expansion will ensure that future attacks of this magnitude will no longer cause disruptions across our infrastructure. At approximately 8:55 PM EST, our monitoring systems alerted us to abnormally high latency and packet loss at our Ashburn location. Our network team responded immediately to investigate the issue. By 9:10 PM EST, we identified the root cause as a major degradation in service from one of our Tier 1 carriers, which was experiencing widespread latency spikes. We promptly began rerouting traffic away from the affected carrier and implemented mitigation measures to stabilize network performance. By 9:25 PM EST, we observed significant improvements across the network, and by 10:10 PM EST, normal operations had fully resumed. Next Steps & Long-Term Resolution We recognize this is the second occurrence involving this carrier. To prevent future incidents, we’ve already initiated a transition away from this provider. We have been waiting for a new cross-connect from an alternate carrier, which has been delayed for approximately four weeks. Once completed, we will fully decommission the affected carrier from our infrastructure. We sincerely apologize for the disruption and understand the importance of consistent, low-latency connectivity. CosmicGuard Outage & Failover Explanation According to CosmicGuard’s official outage report, their London PoP experienced downtime due to an unexpected ASIC restart on their Arista core router. They are conducting a root cause analysis, suspecting it may be linked to new capacity planned for next week. When our DDoS provider goes offline, we always have a fallback ISP in place, ensuring only a brief service disruption—typically no more than 5 seconds. Automated monitoring is in place to detect such issues, but in this case, failover didn’t trigger because the monitored IP within CosmicGuard’s London network continued responding to ICMP pings. All services are back to normal now.
