Official after report from Cosmic.

At approximately 3:26 AM CST, one of our upstream transit providers had a brief interruption on its peering connection with our network. The connection was down for about 10 minutes. When it came back, it did not pass traffic correctly. Our inter-site links had automatically shifted back to that path, so connectivity between our sites was disrupted.

There has been no further instability as of 6PM EDT. We will update this with an official update from GSL.

GSL has confirmed that today’s network interruptions were caused by a separate issue within their network and were not related to the previously reported Cogent wave instability.

The issue involved a long-standing bug affecting GSL’s automated traffic management and routing systems. While troubleshooting the problem, one of their Ashburn routers experienced a forwarding process failure, which resulted in the brief connectivity impacts seen earlier today.
